Play Nice! Robin Rice Books
This is a fascinating play inspired by Jean Genet's "The Maids." Set in the attic of a suburban house in N.J. the days before and after Thanksgiving, present. The Diamond siblings, Matilda, 18, Luce (male) 16, and Isabel, 12 are safe from their unseen but ever-present Mother in the attic, where Luce and Isabel use their extraordinary imaginations to act out fantasies and memories that begin to blend. The action is focused on Isabel's efforts to recall a lost memory through theatrical reenactment to discover who poisoned Mother. Matilda and Isabel have conflicting strategies to keep the siblings safe and together and Luce has his own agenda using imagination to tear through time and space. The relationships are very complex and the dialogue is rich with literary and cultural references. I found the first read compelling enough to go back and read again. As a play script, it provides fabulous opportunities for 4 smart, articulate, creative young actors (3W, 1M) and wonderful design challenges working in the realm of fantasy and imagination. The playwright specifically urges a non-realistic approach, making it a great choice for companies with "economy-sized" budgets. I strongly recommend paying attention to the playwright's notes and taking a look at the inspirational source, Genet's "The Maids." This is NOT a retelling of Genet's story but Genet's shifts in style helped to shed light on the potential for "Play Nice!" to grip and horrify an audience.
